# Connect an AI client to Cactus

Add Cactus to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Codex or Claude Code, and ask about a product from inside the client you already use.

Cactus answers questions about your product from your own sources and cites each answer. Over MCP, the way AI clients connect to tools, you ask it from inside Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Codex or Claude Code.

## For your team

One address reaches every product on your team. The first time a client uses it, you sign in with your Cactus account and see what it sees.

```
https://mcp.heycactus.ai/mcp
```

Claude Code:

```
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user cactus https://mcp.heycactus.ai/mcp
```

Cursor:

1. Open Cactus, go to AI clients in the top navigation, and press Add to Cursor.
2. Or add the address to ~/.cursor/mcp.json yourself, under mcpServers, as { "url": "https://mcp.heycactus.ai/mcp" }.

VS Code:

1. Open Cactus, go to AI clients in the top navigation, and press Add to VS Code.
2. Or add { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.heycactus.ai/mcp" } to .vscode/mcp.json under servers.

Claude:

1. Open Settings, then Connectors, in Claude.
2. Choose Add custom connector.
3. Paste the address.
4. Press Connect.

ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI and IDE extension:

```
[mcp_servers.cactus]
url = "https://mcp.heycactus.ai/mcp"
```

ChatGPT on the web:

1. Open Settings, then Security and login, in ChatGPT, and turn on Developer mode.
2. Open Plugins and press the plus button.
3. Give it a name and a description, and paste the address under Connection.
4. Create the connection.

## What a public help site serves

Each address below is live on our own help site.

Find:

- A robots.txt that lets every AI crawler in and says how the pages may be used, in Content Signals. [cactus.heycactus.ai/robots.txt](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/robots.txt)
- A sitemap with every published page and when it last changed. [cactus.heycactus.ai/sitemap.xml](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/sitemap.xml)
- An llms.txt that lists every page with a line on what it answers. [cactus.heycactus.ai/llms.txt](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/llms.txt)

Read:

- A markdown copy of every page, at the page's address with /md on the end. [cactus.heycactus.ai/publish-machine-readable-help/md](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/publish-machine-readable-help/md)
- The page's own address answers in markdown to a request that sends Accept: text/markdown. [cactus.heycactus.ai/publish-machine-readable-help](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/publish-machine-readable-help)
- Every page in one file, for a model that wants the whole site at once. [cactus.heycactus.ai/llms-full.txt](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/llms-full.txt)

Act:

- A public MCP address anyone can add to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex, no account needed, described by its server card. Every address the site answers for a program, the ask included, is described in OpenAPI at cactus.heycactus.ai/openapi.json. [cactus.heycactus.ai/.well-known/mcp/server-card.json](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/.well-known/mcp/server-card.json)
- An Agent Skill that tells an agent how to ask the help, over MCP or as text. [cactus.heycactus.ai/.well-known/agent-skills/ask-help/SKILL.md](https://cactus.heycactus.ai/.well-known/agent-skills/ask-help/SKILL.md)
- Four tools in the messenger for browser agents, through WebMCP where the browser offers it. The owner can switch them off.

## For your customers

Each published Help Center has its own address, one per product. Anyone can add it to the same six clients with no sign-in and no account, and it answers from published pages only.

```
https://mcp.heycactus.ai/p/<product name>/mcp
```

The name is your Help Center's, the part before .heycactus.ai. The owner finds the exact address in Cactus under AI clients in the top navigation, with a button for each client.

## What each tool can see

Same address either way. What it shows depends on who asks.

Signed in with a Cactus account:

- Your pages, including the ones only your team can read
- The map of your code
- Past conversations with your customers
- Investigations Cactus has run for you

Not signed in:

- Published pages from that one product
- Nothing that is not published

## Answers can be wrong

Every answer links to the page or file it came from, so you can open what Cactus read. It is still a model reading text and can be wrong or out of date, so check anything that matters before you act on it.
